緑内障は、眼球内の液圧が上昇する眼科の病気です。緑内障による視神経障害の原因は完全には解明されていませんが、視神経の機械的な圧迫や血流低下が関与していると考えられています。最も重要な危険因子は、年齢、眼圧の上昇、アフリカ系の家系、角膜の薄さ、緑内障の家族歴などです。症状としては、目の痛み、吐き気や嘔吐(激しい目の痛みに伴う)、突然の視覚障害(多くは暗い場所)、目のかすみ、目の充血があります。
