現在、カーナビゲーションシステムをはじめとして、測量、時刻管理、交通管制など様々な分野において、衛星測位システムは活用されており、社会生活に欠かせないものになっています。

衛星測位システムは、米国GPS(Global Positioning System)や、ロシアGLONASS(Global Navigation Satellite System)がよく知られています。現在、中国BeiDou、欧州Galileo、インドNAVICと独自に測位衛星システムの構築を進めています。わが国では、日本をはじめアジア・オセアニア地域での利用を想定した準天頂衛星システムQZSS(Quasi-Zenith Satellite System)の運用が2018年11月から4機体制で開始されます。なお、独自の自立測位を可能とする7機体制の構築は2023年での実現に向け研究されています。

QZSSは、日本上空において少なくとも1機はほぼ天頂に位置するような地球周回軌道を構築しているため高層ビル等の間でも受信できるだけでなく、他の衛星システムと異なり測位信号に加え高精度測位を実現する補強情報を合わせて送信するためユーザに利用しやすい環境を実現します。

QZSSを利用した事業ビジョンが、防災・災害対応機能、パーソナルナビ、カーナビ、ITS、IT施工(i-Construction)、IT精密農業、測量、交通運行管理、トレーサビリティ等幅広い分野で検討されています。今後はG空間社会(地理空間情報高度利用社会)と表現される、生活環境等の分野に進化して行くものと思われます。
